Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge particular rulings from the official, echoing the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
