As any significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to recognize unsung work and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
