The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
