Right-leaning responses to the partial release of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks prompt serious questions about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for greater transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
But, some conservative commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are entirely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their identities blacked out.
Yet a few do not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Clinton has consistently said he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding these files for months only to release them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Commentary Seems Muted
However, overall discourse on the right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that came before the legislative approval to pass a law mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained little previously unseen data.
