Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
