Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages down to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
